  Episode Five: Hawk Attack

 Waiting for the Hawk was awful. Would he come? When would he come? Could we win? Or was he just too strong? The legends warned us that he could not be beaten.

 The alarm sounded! The Hawk-Devil had been seen. How could he fly so fast? In five minutes, he had knocked, ten Jays to the ground. We raced to our places in the trees.

The branches were full of us. We were near the squirrel forts. My Mom said that we would win. She made us feel better.

The Jays started flying into the hawk’s path. They tried to confuse him. But he knocked them, out of the way like tiny fleas. Was this beast, too tough to beat?

It seemed like the hawk was toying with us. But then we started to fly better. We flew closer to the fort, with the many squirrels in it. We were getting smarter!

We kept going in shorter circles. We were bringing the hawk, closer to the fort. Then the squirrels started hitting the hawk. They were throwing acorns at him!

The hawk was now annoyed. He was boiling mad. But, he also seemed to be getting a little bit dizzy. The hits from the acorns bothered him! He was now the picture of a very confused bird.

My Mom saw what was happening. She called to the Jays, “Get him to the second fort. Now is the time!” It was a special moment. She flew, to the bottom of the second fort. She yelled, “Catch me, coward, hawk!”

I called out to her. “Mom, are you okay?” She came back with, “Watch this, sweetie!” She knew just what she was doing!


 The hawk attacked her. But before he knew it, the squirrels acted! Mom flew away like a Lightning Fairy. The hawk had fallen for their trick!
